The simulator, as many times as you need."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An operating underground mine had to decide how many passing bays to excavate in its access ramp, where to place them along the axis and what length to give them. The ramp is single lane: two vehicles travelling in opposite directions can only pass each other in a bay built for that purpose. The production plan called for a sharp rise in truck traffic over a few years. The mandate addressed the question through simulation, with a model that reproduces the geometry of the ramp and the site&#8217;s actual traffic rules, vehicle by vehicle, and makes it possible to compare layouts before excavating them.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-center\"><blockquote><p>The ramp is excavated once. When two vehicles meet in opposite directions on the same segment, one has to reverse or wait, and the time lost propagates to those behind. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship is not linear: traffic that quadruples does not multiply waiting time by four, because blockages become both more frequent and longer to clear. Intuition therefore becomes unreliable at the very moment the decision is taken, once, for a traffic regime that will only exist later. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the start of the mandate, the number and position of the passing bays were set by the mine plan, with no measure of their actual effect on traffic, and the planned bays were grouped on a single portion of the ramp..<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The approach: each vehicle decides with what it can see<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fixed time step:<\/strong> the model advances in regular steps and represents each vehicle individually, with its dimensions, its speed, its priority rank and its behaviour when vehicles meet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Site rules:<\/strong> the traffic procedure is applied as written, including the safety exceptions, which override everything else.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Local decision:<\/strong> no vehicle consults the global state of the simulation. Each one decides from what it can see and from what it is told. This latency reproduces that of underground radio and makes the calculated waiting times conservative.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"960\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1440 \/ 960;\" width=\"1440\" controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lichens.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Sans-titre-1440-x-960-px-1.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The metric: 90th percentile waiting time rather than the average<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Systematic sweep:<\/strong> number of passing bays, length and position along the axis, for each year of the production plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Several dozen simulated <\/strong>days per layout, with the results pooled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>90th percentile waiting time<\/strong>: the delay that nine vehicles out of ten do not exceed. The average dilutes precisely the blockages that cost production. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the user can change<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Geometry<\/td><td>Ramp length and grades, lane width, number, position and length of the passing bays, parking capacity of the access drifts<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Fleet and traffic<\/td><td>Vehicle types and dimensions, speeds, number of trips per shift, distribution within the shift, shift duration<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Traffic rules<\/td><td>Priority rank by vehicle type, priority to loaded vehicles travelling up, line of sight engagement distance, who yields when vehicles meet, permission to reverse, safety exceptions<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Construction costs<\/td><td>Excavation rate per metre, developed length taken into account, treatment of the access drifts<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Economic assumptions<\/td><td>Waiting cost by vehicle type, number of shifts per year, toggle between direct cost and the opportunity cost of the ore<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monetization is a sensitivity, not a result<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two readings can be activated: the direct cost of a minute of waiting by vehicle type, which combines the operator, idling fuel consumption and ownership cost, and the opportunity cost of the ore when haulage limits mill feed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the gap between these two readings is an order of magnitude, monetization is presented as a sensitivity that can be switched on, not as a result.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the study showed<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Placement is free:<\/strong> with strictly identical construction, the same loops and the same civil works cost, simply repositioning the passing bays already in the plan removes a notable share of peak waiting time. Spreading them along the axis reduces the distance a vehicle has to travel before it finds a passing bay. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Number comes at a cost, with diminishing returns:<\/strong> each passing bay added improves flow, but less and less, and the curve flattens quickly. The recommended number is the one at which an additional bay stops being worth its cost. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length does not drive flow:<\/strong> the two straight section lengths tested give equivalent results, the shorter one costing slightly less. The curved access drifts of the loop already carry most of the parking capacity. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The impacts<\/h2>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Before.<\/strong> The number and position of the passing bays are set by the plan, with no measure of their effect on traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>After.<\/strong> The layout is chosen from scenarios that have been simulated and compared, quantified in waiting time and construction cost.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, the tool settles several questions that arose together.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How many passing bays to build, and where to place them along the axis of the ramp.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What length to give them, and whether that length is worth its excavation cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From which year the production ramp up makes the current layout insufficient, and therefore when to build.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which traffic rules actually change throughput, and which change nothing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether the target number of trips per shift is achievable with the layout under consideration, or how far short it falls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since every layout was evaluated on the same model and the same cost base, what the study measures most reliably is the gap between layouts, rather than the absolute value of each one.
